The problem it solves in one box
One source, two screens, both a long way off. Doing that with separate devices means a splitter, two extender pairs, and an EDID argument between them. This does it in one, over Cat 6, at up to fifty metres.
The EDID part
Learning capability, stated. A splitter has to answer the source’s question about what the display can do, and there are two displays with two answers. A device that always reports the lowest common capability quietly downgrades the better screen. Learning is how it is told what to say.
The power arrangement
PoC. One supply runs the system, with power carried over the network cable. At two remote screens, that removes two sockets from an installation.
The unglamorous protection
An ESD circuit. Network cable run between rooms picks up static, and a discharge into an HDMI input destroys hardware. It is not a feature anyone shops for and it is why installations survive.
The limit
1080p at 60 Hz. No 4K path at all, at any distance, and it is the most expensive 1080p device on this shelf. What is being paid for is the combination — split and extend — rather than the resolution.
