A spring-roller screen with nothing to fail — the mechanism is a spring and a lock, and the format is the thing to check.
The bottom line The simplest thing that works, at a price below the motor — with a format that has to be chosen deliberately.
A spring roller and a lock. Nothing electrical, no trigger, no remote, and nothing to fail except the spring itself after many years. In a room where the screen comes down for an evening once a week, that simplicity is worth more than a motor.
4:3, and it needs to be a decision. A 16:9 film uses the width and leaves unlit fabric above and below. That suits mixed use and wastes surface in a pure cinema room.
Slow retract. Without it, the fabric returns quickly and the edges crease over the years. It is worth confirming in the manual, because it is the difference between a screen that ages well and one that does not.
Some waviness, most visible near the sides. Fabric that has been rolled keeps the memory of it. Leave a new screen fully extended for a week before judging it — most of it falls out.
The black band above the image sets where the picture lands. Aim for the bottom edge at roughly seated eye level, which usually means mounting lower than instinct suggests.

A damped mechanism that lowers the fabric back into the case over several seconds instead of snapping it up. Snapping creases the fabric at the edges over years of use, and slow retract is the single feature that separates a pull-down screen that lasts a decade from one that does not.
Only in convenience. The fabric and the flatness are the same; what changes is whether you walk to the wall. In a room where the screen comes down once a week, the manual mechanism is simpler and has less to break.
