The flattest surface money buys
The best fixed frame projector screens for 2026
A tensioned fabric on a rigid frame is the only projector surface with no waves in it, and flatness is worth more to an image than most of what is printed on a projector box. Three published figures separate them. Gain says how much light is returned toward the viewer: 1.0 is neutral, above that brightens the centre and narrows the useful viewing angle. The material decides the rest — a white PVC weave, a grey fabric that deepens black at the cost of peak white, or an acoustically transparent weave that lets speakers sit behind it. And the black backing, which every serious maker states, is what stops light passing through and coming back. We compare stated gain, diagonal and aspect ratio, material and whether the backing is opaque, frame width and any velvet edge, and viewing angle.
