Optical, directional, and matched to one projector geometry
An ALR screen is an optical filter, not a fabric colour. Its surface is built to return light arriving from one direction and absorb light arriving from the others, which is why the first question is not gain but geometry: a screen made for a ceiling-mounted long-throw projector rejects light from the sides, while a CLR (ceiling light rejecting) screen for an ultra short throw projector is saw-toothed to accept light from below and reject the ceiling lamp above. Pair them the wrong way round and the image is dimmer than on a plain white sheet. The trade is real and worth stating: these screens have a narrower viewing angle and can show sparkle or hot-spotting.
