A UHD disc carries a bitrate several times higher than any stream, and it carries lossless audio, which is the reason this shelf survives. What separates players starts with the formats on the disc side — UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, SACD and DVD-Audio are five different licences, and the last two appear only on the machines aimed at music. On the output side, look for Dolby Vision support, which not every player has, and for a second HDMI output that sends audio to an older receiver while video goes straight to the display. Then two practical facts that listings hide: region coding, which differs between UHD (region free) and Blu-ray (locked), and whether the machine decodes lossless audio itself or only passes it through.
