That makes height the first specification, and the arithmetic is simple — a sofa puts most ears between 95 and 110 cm, and a bookshelf speaker's tweeter sits partway up its cabinet. After that, the differences are mechanical. A fillable column, packed with sand or dry filler, adds mass and stops the column ringing, which is the single measurable improvement in the category. The top plate must be no larger than the speaker's base, and spikes or rubber feet matter according to the floor: spikes bite through carpet into the slab, rubber protects a wooden floor.
