A light behind a screen in a dark room reduces the contrast the eye has to cope with, which is why broadcast rooms have used it for decades — and the classic version is deliberately white at around 6500 K, matching the reference white of the picture so nothing on screen shifts colour. That is bias lighting, and its specification is colour temperature and accuracy. Sold alongside it is a different product with the same shape: a colour-changing strip that follows the image, which is entertainment rather than calibration and works by one of three methods — a camera watching the screen, an HDMI box reading the signal, or software on a computer. The HDMI method is the accurate one and the most expensive.
