Bias lighting, which is a fixed white light at around 6500 K, matching the picture’s reference white so nothing appears to shift colour. And colour-following strips, which track the image.

The first is calibration. The second is entertainment. This is the second, and it is worth being clear about that before spending several times as much.

How it reads the picture

A camera, watching the screen. That is one of three methods: a camera, an HDMI box reading the signal before the television, or software on a computer. The HDMI method is the accurate one and the most expensive; a camera works with anything on the screen including broadcast television, and is affected by ambient light and by exactly where it is mounted.

The correction

Fish-eye correction, stated to widen the effective area and improve colour matching. That addresses the real weakness of a camera system: a lens close to a screen sees the edges at a steep angle and the corners worst of all.

The emitter

RGBICW, with a dedicated warm-white chip alongside the RGB. White mixed from red, green and blue is never as clean as white from a white emitter, and adding one is the difference between a strip that can produce a decent white and one that cannot.

And still

For image quality in a dark room, the plain 6500 K strip with a published CRI is the correct purchase, at a fraction of this price. This is the one to buy when the light show is the point.
