What bias lighting is actually for

A light behind a screen in a dark room reduces the contrast the eye has to cope with, which is why broadcast rooms have used it for decades. The classic version is deliberately white at around 6500 K — matching the reference white of the picture, so nothing on screen appears to shift colour.

Which is why the colour temperature here is the story

3000 K warm white. Behind a screen, a warm light makes the picture look cooler by comparison, and the eye’s white balance is pulled towards the lamp. That is the opposite of what bias lighting is designed to do.

The two strips at 6500 K in this catalogue are the ones on that errand.

What it is genuinely good at

Warm ambient light. Along a shelf, under a cabinet, behind furniture. It is the cheapest strip here, it is IP65-rated so it tolerates a damp room, and it cuts at every LED rather than every five centimetres — which means it can be trimmed to any run exactly.

The emitter

SMD 3528. Individual LEDs at intervals, which produce visible dots if the strip is seen directly. COB strips — two of them are on this shelf — produce a continuous line instead.

The power

USB, 5 V, from the television’s own port. That means it comes on and goes off with the television, which is exactly what a backlight should do.

Availability

On sale from 7 € to 11 € on the German, British, French, Italian and Spanish Amazon stores at the time of checking.

The Italian and Spanish Amazon listings are priced above 1.6× the cheapest store, which is normally a reshipping offer rather than a local price; they are left out of the range above.

Not found on the American Amazon store, where the buy link falls back to a local search rather than to a page that does not exist.

Prices and availability are what Keepa reported on the date this page was updated; both move.
