Why this shelf exists

Televisions removed their analogue outputs. Amplifiers kept their analogue inputs. A converter bridges the two, and there is nothing else it does.

The thing that will actually go wrong

Format handling. A converter that accepts stereo PCM only produces complete silence on a source set to output Dolby Digital — not distortion, not a quiet signal, nothing. It reads exactly like a dead unit. The fix is a menu setting on the television, changing the audio output to PCM.

This listing does not state its format handling, which makes the menu setting the first thing to try rather than the last.

What is unusual here

Both cables in the box. An optical lead and an RCA lead, which is two purchases most converters expect you to make separately. At this price that is the whole argument.

The volume control

On the unit itself. Useful when the output level does not match what the amplifier expects — which is common enough that a converter without one can be unusable at low listening levels.

The 192 kHz figure

Every converter here quotes it. A television sends 48 kHz. It describes the ceiling and not the use.
