What an extractor is for

A streaming stick, a Chromecast, a modern player: HDMI out and nothing else. No optical, no RCA. An extractor sits in the HDMI run, separates the audio and passes the video on, which is the only way to get sound from those devices to an amplifier that predates HDMI.

The three modes, and why a switch is better than automation

5.1 mode sends surround out of the optical socket only. 2.0 mode sends stereo PCM out of both optical and the RCA pair. Pass-through leaves the signal alone.

Choosing with a switch means the behaviour is deliberate. Boxes that negotiate this automatically produce the failure people actually meet: silence, on a mode nobody chose.

Why 5.1 cannot come out of the RCA sockets

Because they are two channels. Surround has to leave as a digital bitstream, and optical is the only digital output here. That is a property of the connections rather than of this box.

The contradiction in the listing

The title says 4K at 30 Hz. The specification bullet says 4K at 60 Hz. Where a listing gives two answers, plan around the lower one.

The general caution

Every extra box in an HDMI chain is another handshake that can fail. The reason to accept one is that the alternative is no sound at all.

On sale from 20 € to 23 € on the German, French, Italian and Spanish Amazon stores at the time of checking.
