STRONG SRT420 4K streaming box with Android TV and DVB-T2 tuner review

A streaming box with a broadcast tuner inside it — which makes it the only device here that receives free-to-air television as well as streaming it.

The bottom line Two devices in one for a German household — and the tuner is exactly the part that does not travel.

The feature that separates it

A DVB-T2 tuner. Every other box on this shelf streams; this one also receives broadcast television directly. For a household that watches free-to-air channels, that removes a second device and a second remote.

The condition attached

Broadcast reception is national. DVB-T2 with HEVC covers much of Europe and national platforms add their own requirements — encryption on some channels, different codec profiles, regional multiplex arrangements. A tuner correct in Germany is not automatically correct elsewhere, and this is the only family in this catalogue where that is true.

The storage limit

8 GB. It is the specification that will constrain this box first: apps grow with updates, and the failure shows as apps refusing to update rather than as a storage warning.

What is not published

The DRM certification level, as everywhere on this shelf.

Where it makes sense

A second television, a holiday flat, a kitchen — anywhere free-to-air channels are the main use and streaming is the addition rather than the reverse.

What we like, and what we don't

Strengths

  • A DVB-T2 tuner built in, so free-to-air television works without a separate receiver
  • The cheapest device on this shelf
  • Android TV, so the app store is the familiar one

Compromises

  • 8 GB of storage will fill after a handful of apps and their updates
  • The DVB-T2 tuner is a national specification — it is right for Germany and may be useless elsewhere
  • DRM certification level not stated

Questions people actually ask

Will the tuner work outside Germany?

It depends on the country. DVB-T2 with HEVC is the standard across much of Europe, and national platforms add requirements on top — some countries encrypt free-to-air channels, others use different codecs. A tuner that is right in one country can be useless one border away.

Is 8 GB of storage enough?

For a handful of services, yes. It fills as apps update, and the symptom is failure to update rather than a warning. If the box is meant to last years with many apps, it is the specification that will limit it.
