The advice worth more than the product

The maker states: run a DVB-T2 reception check to establish whether you need a roof, outdoor or indoor aerial. That check is published by broadcasters, it takes a minute, and it can conclude that no indoor aerial will work at your address.

A manufacturer publishing an instruction that may cost it the sale is worth crediting, and it is the single most useful sentence on this entire shelf.

The specification that matters more than gain

A low-noise amplifier. Every amplifier adds noise while lifting the signal. A very high-gain amplifier that adds a lot of noise leaves the signal no more usable than before. Low noise is what makes the lift real, and it is a harder thing to build than raw gain.

The gain figure itself is not published here, which is an odd omission from an otherwise technical listing.

The 5G filter

Mobile networks sit next to the frequencies terrestrial television uses, and 5G is the newest neighbour. Near a mast, a filter can be what makes reception possible.

The power arrangement

Any USB port — the television’s own — or the supplied mains adapter. That removes the need for a socket beside the aerial, which on a device whose position is found by trial is a real freedom.
