The range figure done properly

Up to 50 m outdoors in line of sight, 15 to 20 m indoors. Two numbers rather than one. Outdoor line-of-sight figures are what every Bluetooth product quotes and nobody experiences; publishing the indoor figure alongside it is the honest version, and 15 to 20 metres through walls is genuinely good.

Class 1

A radio classification permitting higher transmit power, which is what the range figures rest on. It is a hardware difference rather than a version number, and it is the reason this receiver reaches further than the others here.

The codecs

aptX HD and aptX Adaptive. Both need a phone that supports them — common on Android, absent on iPhone, which falls back to AAC. Worth checking before buying for the codec.

The behaviour that makes it disappear into a system

It switches itself on and reconnects when the socket is powered. On a hi-fi behind a switched extension lead, that is the difference between a component and a chore.

The output side

3.5 mm and RCA. Analogue, so the conversion is done here rather than handed back to the amplifier’s own converter.
