The order
- Position before anything else. Get the distance and height right physically; do not correct with keystone what you can fix by moving the machine.
- Fill the screen with zoom and lens shift, not with digital correction.
- Focus on text, not on a film. Pause on a menu or a subtitle and focus there — a moving image hides softness.
- Choose the cinema picture mode.
- Turn sharpness down, usually to zero or near it. Most factory settings add artificial edges that look like detail on a shop floor and like halos at home.
- Set the lamp or laser mode to suit the room.
The two settings most people leave wrong
Sharpness, above, and overscan or “just scan” — some projectors crop a few per cent of the image by default and then scale what remains, which softens everything. Turning it off is a single menu entry and a visible improvement.
What to do about fan noise
Eco mode, and distance. A projector directly behind the seating is the worst place for it acoustically, and the difference between eco and full brightness is stated in the specification as a decibel figure worth reading before buying.
When to stop
When you stop noticing the picture. A calibrated projector is one you forget about, and chasing further changes usually means undoing the ones that worked.
Questions people actually ask
Which picture mode should I choose?
The one named cinema, film or movie. It is dimmer than the default and closer to how the material was graded. If the room is bright and it looks too dim, that is a brightness and screen problem rather than a reason to go back to dynamic mode.
Should I use eco mode?
In a dark room, usually yes: it is quieter, the light source lasts longer, and the image is often bright enough. In a bright room it is the first thing to turn off. Manufacturers state lamp life per mode, and the difference between modes is substantial.
