It is worth it when the room cannot take a projector at the back — and it commits you to a rigid, matched screen, which is a real cost.
What it solves
The machine sits on the furniture under the screen. No cable run to the back of the room, no ceiling bracket, no shadow when someone walks past, and it can be lived with in a room that is also a living room.
The two constraints
The surface must be flat to within millimetres. Light arriving almost parallel to the screen exaggerates every imperfection, so a pull-down screen with a gentle wave becomes a visible band. The screen must reject light from above. A ceiling-light-rejecting screen is saw-toothed to accept light from below and absorb the ceiling lamp. On an ordinary white screen, an expensive ultra short throw machine looks worse than a cheaper long-throw one on a good surface.
The honest cost comparison
The projector plus its matched screen, against a large television. That is the comparison these machines are actually sold against, and it is the fair one.
Where they are clearly right
A room with no ceiling to mount from, no way to run a cable, and enough furniture depth beneath the screen. In that room, nothing else in this catalogue does the job.

Can I use it on a normal screen?
You can, and it wastes the design. Light arriving at a grazing angle turns any ripple in the fabric into a visible band, and an ordinary white screen reflects the room's light straight back. These machines are paired with rigid ceiling-light-rejecting screens for both reasons.
Does it need to be exactly square to the screen?
More than any other projector. At a throw ratio below 0.4, a centimetre of rotation at the machine is a visible distortion at the screen, and geometry correction costs image quality. Most models include an alignment routine for exactly this reason.
