Sit as close as the image structure allows: near enough that the picture fills your vision, far enough that you cannot see pixels or screen texture.
The two limits
Too close and you see the construction of the image — pixel structure on a low-resolution projector, weave on a textured screen, and the whole picture stops being a window and becomes a surface. Too far and the image occupies too little of your field of view to be immersive, which is the entire reason for projecting rather than watching a television.
What moves the near limit
Resolution, and the screen. A 4K image can be watched from closer than a 1080p one of the same size before its structure shows. A smooth screen fabric can be watched from closer than a coarse one.
The test that beats any formula
Put a paused frame with fine detail on the screen — text, or a face — and walk toward it until you can see the pixels. That distance is your near limit. Sit just beyond it.
What this means for buying
If the seating is fixed and far from the wall, a larger image serves you better than a higher resolution. If the room is small and the seating is close, resolution starts to matter, and so does the screen fabric.

Yes, and that is most of what higher resolution buys on a projected image. At a distance where 1080p pixels are visible, 4K is not; sitting further back than that, the two look increasingly alike, which is why resolution matters less than people expect at ordinary living-room distances.

The industry recommendations describe a viewing angle rather than a distance, which is why they are expressed as a fraction of image width. Rather than repeat a figure as though it were a standard, the honest test is the one below: move the seat and look.
