A shelf works if the projector has vertical lens shift or an offset that suits the height; without either, the ceiling is usually the only place the image lands square.
Why offset decides this
Most home cinema projectors do not throw straight ahead. They place the image entirely above or below the lens axis, by a fixed percentage of image height. Mounted upside down at ceiling height, an offset that pushes the image downward puts it exactly where you want it. The same machine on a low shelf pushes the image into the ceiling.
What lens shift changes
Optical shift moves the lens rather than the picture, so the image moves without distortion. A machine with real vertical shift can sit on a shelf behind the seating and still fill the screen. It is the single specification that most often decides whether a projector suits a room that was not designed for one.

Ceiling: nothing on the furniture, no shadows from people walking past, cables hidden in one run. Fixed, and a nuisance to adjust. Shelf: no drilling, easy to change, easy to take away. Uses a surface, and puts the fan closer to the seating.

Does a ceiling mount need a special projector?
No, but it needs one whose menu can invert the image, which is universal, and a bracket that matches the threaded holes underneath. Measure their spacing before ordering: "universal" covers a range that widely spaced patterns fall outside.
