Why does my picture keep dropping out or flickering?

At high resolutions and refresh rates, this is a bandwidth symptom — and cable length is the most common cause.

Intermittent blanking, flickering or sparkles at 4K and high refresh rates is a bandwidth problem in almost every case, and the first thing to change is the cable length.

The test that identifies it in a minute

Drop the source to 1080p or to 60 Hz. If the problem disappears, it is bandwidth. If it persists at every setting, it is a connection or a device.

Why length is the usual culprit

Passive copper carries 48 Gbit/s reliably to roughly three metres — an order of magnitude rather than a hard limit, and it varies with construction. Beyond that, an active or optical cable is the correct answer rather than a more expensive passive one.

The other bandwidth ceilings in the chain

Any splitter, switch or extender rated below the source and display. Bypass each one in turn: if the picture becomes stable, that box is the ceiling.

What “sparkles” specifically means

Small bright dots scattered over the image are the classic signature of a marginal high-bandwidth HDMI link, distinct from the blocky artefacts of a poor stream. If the picture sparkles, look at the cable path rather than at the source.

Where it is not the cable

If a picture is stable but the whole image occasionally blacks out for a second across every source, HDCP renegotiation is more likely — often triggered by a device in the chain waking or sleeping.

Questions people actually ask

Would a thicker cable help?

Not by itself. What matters is the certified category and the length: an Ultra High Speed cable at two metres is more reliable than an uncertified thick one at five. Thickness is construction rather than bandwidth.

Could it be the device rather than the cable?

Yes, if there is a splitter, switch or extender in the chain rated for less bandwidth than the ends. That box becomes the ceiling for the whole path, and it is the first thing to bypass when testing.
