Yes — and it is the sensible way to start, because it tells you whether the position and the size work before you commit to a screen.
What a wall does badly
Texture. Anything from a light orange peel to a plaster ridge becomes visible in a projected image, particularly with a short-throw projector whose light arrives at a shallow angle. Uniformity. Walls are rarely one colour across four metres, and the image shows it. Edges. There is no border, so the overspill at the edge of the image blurs into the room instead of being absorbed.
What the border is actually worth
More than most people expect. A black velvet frame absorbs the light that falls just outside the image and gives the eye a hard edge to reference, which makes the picture look sharper and its blacks deeper. It is the cheapest visible improvement in a projected system.
When the wall is genuinely the right answer
A smooth, matt, neutral wall in a dark room, with a projector of ordinary throw. That configuration is close enough to a plain white screen that the money is better spent elsewhere in the system.
When it is not
Any short-throw or ultra short throw projector, where the grazing light exaggerates every imperfection, and any room where the image has to fight ambient light.
Questions people actually ask
What kind of paint works best?
A matt finish in a neutral white or light grey. Anything with sheen produces a hot spot where the lamp reflects, and any tint shifts the colour of everything. Specialist screen paints exist and are a genuine improvement over ordinary emulsion, at a cost between paint and a screen.
Is the difference really visible?
Most visibly at the edges and in the black level. A wall has no border to absorb overspill, and it is rarely as uniform as it looks with the lights on — texture that is invisible in a lit room shows up in a projected image.
