eARC is the enhanced audio return channel: it sends audio backwards down an HDMI cable from the television to a soundbar or receiver, with enough bandwidth for lossless and object-based formats. Ordinary ARC does not have that bandwidth.
Why the return channel exists at all
Modern televisions are the hub: apps run on them, and the sources plug into them. The audio then has to travel back out to whatever is producing the sound. ARC and eARC are the connections that carry it.
What each one can carry
ARC: compressed formats — Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Atmos inside Dolby Digital Plus. eARC: everything ARC carries, plus uncompressed multi-channel PCM and lossless Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.
When you need it
If a disc player is connected to the television rather than directly to the receiver, and you want the lossless soundtrack. If everything is streamed, ARC is sufficient in practice.
The one to prefer anyway
eARC, if the choice is free, because it also improves lip-sync handling and is the connection new equipment assumes. Check that the television port is labelled eARC — usually only one of them is.
Questions people actually ask
Will ARC work for Dolby Atmos?
Only in its compressed form, carried inside Dolby Digital Plus — which is what streaming apps use, so in practice ARC handles streamed Atmos. What it cannot carry is the lossless TrueHD version from a disc.
Do both ends need to support it?
Yes, and so does the cable in between for the higher bandwidth. An eARC television connected to an ARC-only soundbar falls back to ARC, silently, which is why a system can appear to work and still not be doing what you bought it for.
