Is a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio real?

It is a dynamic figure, produced by dimming the light source between scenes. The number that describes a single image is native contrast.

It is a dynamic contrast figure: the projector dims its light source during dark scenes and reports the ratio between the brightest possible white and the darkest possible black across different frames — never within one image.

The two figures, and why only one is comparable

Native contrast is measured on a single frame: white and black in the same image. Dynamic contrast allows the machine to change its light output between measurements, which is why the number can be arbitrarily large. Both are legitimate measurements of different things, and only the first describes what a picture looks like.

What dynamic contrast does in practice

It works, within limits. An iris or a laser dimming during a dark scene genuinely deepens the black. What it cannot do is produce a bright highlight and a deep black at the same moment, which is exactly the situation — a lamp in a night scene — where contrast is visible.

The number that is not published

Most makers publish only the dynamic figure. Where a native contrast ratio is not published, these pages say it is not published rather than repeating the dynamic figure as though it described an image.

What actually raises black level in your room

Light. A white ceiling reflecting the image back onto the screen will destroy more contrast than the difference between two projectors, and it is free to fix with a darker wall behind the seating.

What is a good native contrast figure?

It depends on the technology, and the honest answer is that makers who publish native contrast are the ones worth comparing. DLP and LCD projectors in the home cinema range typically publish native figures in the hundreds to low thousands to one, while the dynamic figures printed alongside them run into the millions.

Does contrast matter more than brightness?

In a dark room, usually yes: contrast is what makes a night scene look like night rather than dark grey. In a room with ambient light, brightness and the screen matter more, because stray light raises the black level of the image before the projector has any say in it.
