The two devices that share this shelf

A splitter sends one source to several displays. A switch sends several sources to one display. They are opposite jobs in the same shaped box, and this one is wired to do either — two in and one out, or one in and two out.

The number to read

3.4 Gbit/s stated. Full 4K at 60 Hz in 4:4:4 colour is conventionally around 18 Gbit/s. A stated 3.4 Gbit/s is a much smaller figure than the resolution headline suggests, and it is the figure to plan around. For 1080p sources and undemanding 4K, it is not a problem; for a demanding 4K chain, it is.

What is not stated

EDID handling. In splitter mode, the box has to reconcile the capabilities of two different screens — and one that always reports the lowest common capability downgrades the better screen. It is the invisible cause of most failures on this shelf and this listing does not address it.

The advantage of needing no power

One fewer socket, one fewer cable, and nothing to fail. On a passive box that is a real virtue, and it is also why the signal is divided rather than regenerated.

When something stops working

If a picture works alone and fails through this box, look at EDID and HDCP before blaming the cable. It is almost never the cable.
