3.1. Three channels around you and a subwoofer. The third is a dedicated centre, and that is where a film’s dialogue lives. It is the difference between a bar that makes the television louder and one that makes speech intelligible.
One box, one power cable, one thing to place. A separate wireless subwoofer reaches lower and needs a socket and a corner. In a room where the television sits on a sideboard and nothing else fits, the integrated design is the one that gets used.
A power figure with conditions. That is common on soundbars and it means this bar cannot be compared on power with one stating “W RMS into 8 ohms” — and this page will not treat an unconditioned figure as though it were one.
Dolby Audio. Not Atmos, not DTS:X. On a bar at this price that is honest rather than deficient: the formats it decodes are the ones that arrive from most sources, and a badge it does not carry is a badge it does not claim.
That the audio output is set correctly. A television sending stereo to a 3.1 bar wastes the centre channel entirely, and that setting is the most common reason a new bar disappoints.

Because the third channel is the centre, and most of a film's dialogue is mixed to it. A 2.1 bar reproduces the centre as a phantom image between its drivers, which works from the middle seat and degrades as you move. Surround channels add ambience; the centre adds intelligibility.
For most rooms and most content, yes — it removes the bass work from the small drivers, which is most of what a subwoofer does for clarity. What it cannot do is reach the lowest octave, and a separate cabinet does that better because it has more air behind the driver.
