AWOL VISION Aetherion Pro ultra short throw 4K projector review

The only machine in this catalogue that publishes a native contrast ratio — 6 000:1 — alongside a measured brightness figure, which is what makes it comparable rather than merely impressive.

The bottom line The specification sheet this shelf needs more of: a native contrast figure, a measured brightness unit, and a stated input lag — three numbers that can each be checked against a competitor.

The figure that sets it apart

6 000:1 native contrast. Native means measured on a single frame — white and black in the same image — rather than across frames with the light source dimming. Almost every other listing in this catalogue publishes a dynamic figure in the millions and no native one at all. A modest native number is a stronger statement than a huge dynamic one, and this page treats it that way.

The brightness, in a real unit

2 600 ISO lumens. ISO 21118 is a defined standard, and in practice an ISO figure is comparable with an ANSI one. That makes this machine comparable with the rest of the shelf — which is not true of anything quoting an unqualified figure.

The gaming specification

1 ms stated input lag. On an ultra short throw projector that is unusual, and it is a specification with a defined meaning rather than a claim about feel.

What the purchase actually includes

The projector. Not the screen, and an ultra short throw machine on an ordinary white surface is worse than a cheaper long-throw projector on a good one — the light arrives at a grazing angle and every imperfection shows. Budget for a matched ceiling-light-rejecting screen at the same time.

Setting it up

Expect to spend time on alignment. At this throw ratio, a centimetre of rotation at the machine is a visible distortion at the screen, and geometry correction costs image quality. Most models of this type include an alignment routine for exactly that reason.

What we like, and what we don't

Strengths

  • Publishes a NATIVE contrast ratio, which almost nothing else on this shelf does — the figure that describes a single frame
  • Brightness in ISO lumens, a measured unit comparable with ANSI figures in practice
  • 1 ms stated input lag, which is a genuine gaming specification rather than a marketing one
  • Dolby Vision support stated explicitly

Compromises

  • Requires a matched ceiling-light-rejecting screen, which is a substantial additional purchase
  • A 6 000:1 native figure is honest and modest compared with the million-to-one dynamic numbers printed elsewhere — that comparison is misleading and worth understanding
  • Ultra short throw alignment is unforgiving and takes patience to get square

Questions people actually ask

Is 6 000:1 a low contrast ratio?

It is a native figure, and it is not comparable to the dynamic numbers other listings print. A native ratio is measured on one frame, white against black in the same image; a dynamic one lets the machine change its light output between measurements, which is why those figures reach millions. A published native figure is a stronger claim than a large dynamic one.

What does anti-RBE mean?

Rainbow effect: the brief colour separation some viewers see on single-chip projectors that use a colour wheel. The maker states a design intended to reduce it. Whether you see the effect at all is individual — many people never do.
