The bottom line The straightforward one: disc, radio, phone, wooden cabinets — nothing to set up and nothing that can stop working when a service changes.
Wooden speaker cabinets. A cabinet that vibrates adds its own colouration, and on a small speaker the material is one of two things that limit it. It is stated here, and it is not stated on most of this shelf.
Accounts, apps, licensing. A CD player, two radio tuners and Bluetooth work regardless of what any streaming service decides. On a device meant to sit in a room for a decade, that independence is worth something.
40 W, without stated conditions. Modest, and adequate for the rooms this belongs in. It is not comparable with an RMS rating and it is not meant to be.
Network streaming of any kind. A phone connects over Bluetooth, which means the phone must stay in range and the audio stops when a call arrives.
A second room. Somewhere a system should turn on, play a disc or a station, and never need a firmware update.

A cabinet that resonates adds its own sound to the music, and a rigid, damped material resonates less than thin plastic. It is a genuine specification and a modest one — cabinet bracing and volume matter as much as material.
For a bedroom, kitchen or study, no. Loudness rises slowly with power and a compact system is limited by its drivers long before its amplifier. Where 40 W would be limiting is a large open room.
